John carefully recorded not only the act that Jesus performed, but the instructions and spiritual teachings that He imparted to the disciples during the sacrament of footwashing. All of the Lord’s commandments need to be kept. Not a single commandment can be neglected, regardless of how many times it is mentioned in the Bible (Mt 5:18-19; Rev 22:19). We can thus be sure that although there is no biblical record of the disciples performing the sacrament, they would have obeyed Jesus’ direct instruction to them.
