Renew Our Vows

Renew Our Vows with God

Many of us have heard of the concept of renewing wedding vows.

After a couple has been married for many years, the passionate love they initially shared will likely settle into a deeper and steadier companionship. Over the years, the love between them does not necessarily fade, but may become less exciting. So at a certain milestone in their marriage, the couple might decide to reaffirm their love for each other by renewing their wedding vows – basically saying, “Hey, I’m glad I made the right choice of marrying you, and I still want to continue living the rest of my life with you.”

Our covenant with God is likened to a marriage. The moment we are baptized and put our faith in Jesus Christ is when we enter into a divine covenant with Him, declaring to the universe that we now belong to Him and will love and faithfully follow Him for eternity. While external circumstances can sometimes distract us from the love we have for God, we must not let the passage of time water down the intensity of our love for Him.

Today, God yearns for us to reaffirm our love for Him.

Regardless of the number of years we’ve walked with God, let us consider renewing our vows with Him. We can recall the love that we shared with our Husband (Isa 54:5) in the beginning, and the joy and grace we have experienced along the way. We can remember how He has, with deep love, carried us through the most difficult times and accepted us in the multitude of our imperfections. And by reflecting upon the crucial role He plays in our lives, we can recognize that we have become who we are today because of Him.

How we choose to renew our love for God may vary for each individual. But a common starting point is to invest more time and heart into improving the quality of our relationship with Him through more sincere, heartfelt worship and focused spiritual cultivation. As we uncover reasons to celebrate and appreciate our faith, we will be better prepared to continue on the journey ahead.

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” – Mt 22:37

Questions for Reflection

1.      How has your relationship with God developed or changed since you first believed and entered into this covenant with Him?

2.      Think of a personal experience that reassures you of continuing in this covenant with Him.

3.      How can you renew your vow (i.e. reaffirm your love) with God? What changes would you need to make in your life?
