over the five-king alliance (chapter 10).
1. Five-king
alliance attacks Gibeon (1-5).
a.
When the kings of Jerusalem
and Canaan heard about the victory of the Israelites,
they were very afraid.
b.
Because the Gibeonites
had established a covenant with the Israelites, the five-king alliance attacked
Gibeon.
c.
Gibeon
sent someone to seek help from Joshua (6).
(a)
God made use of this to deliver the kings into
the hands of the Israelites.
2.
Joshua was victorious over the five-king
alliance
a.
Joshua and all the mighty men of valor set out
courageously from Gilgal (7).
b.
God promised to deliver the enemies into his
hand (8).
c.
When the Israelites attacked them suddenly, the
enemies became confused and chaos reigned; Joshua killed them with a great
slaughter (9, 10).
d.
God sent down large hailstones to attack the
enemies (11).
e.
Joshua prayed for the sun and moon to stand
still for a day, so that he could wipe out the enemies (12-14).
f.
The five kings escaped and hid in a cave; they
were brought before Joshua. The congregation put their feet on the necks of
these kings, and finally they were killed and hung on trees until evening
(16-27).
3.
Conquest of the southern cities (28-43).
a.
Attacked and captured seven cities: Makkedah, Libnah, Lachish, Gezer,
Eglon, Hebron,
and Debir.
b.
Killed all in the city; none were left (30, 33,
35, 37, 39, 40).
c.
Joshua killed them and captured their land, for
God fought for Israel
(42, 43).
