1.       Five-king alliance attacks Gibeon (1-5).

 a.      When the kings of Jerusalem and Canaan heard about the victory of the Israelites, they were very afraid.

 b.      Because the Gibeonites had established a covenant with the Israelites, the five-king alliance attacked Gibeon.

(a)     God made use of this to deliver the kings into the hands of the Israelites.

2.       Joshua was victorious over the five-king alliance

 a.      Joshua and all the mighty men of valor set out courageously from Gilgal (7).

 b.      God promised to deliver the enemies into his hand (8).

 c.      When the Israelites attacked them suddenly, the enemies became confused and chaos reigned; Joshua killed them with a great slaughter (9, 10).

 d.      God sent down large hailstones to attack the enemies (11).

 e.      Joshua prayed for the sun and moon to stand still for a day, so that he could wipe out the enemies (12-14).

 f.       The five kings escaped and hid in a cave; they were brought before Joshua. The congregation put their feet on the necks of these kings, and finally they were killed and hung on trees until evening (16-27).

3.       Conquest of the southern cities (28-43).

 a.      Attacked and captured seven cities: Makkedah, Libnah, Lachish, Gezer, Eglon, Hebron, and Debir.

 b.      Killed all in the city; none were left (30, 33, 35, 37, 39, 40).

 c.      Joshua killed them and captured their land, for God fought for Israel (42, 43).
