THOUGHTS UPON SUMMER 85

The Bible Seminar, 24th, 26th August, conducted by Pr. En Quek Chin (England), marked the beginning of a series of spiritual events that were to occur in LondonChurch in the summer of 1985.  During this first seminar, participants spent the two days studying the book of Judges (chap. 1-8).  Rich in spiritual teachings, this book presents an invaluable insight into the far-reaching and unfathomable wisdom of God.  From His dealings with the ancient Israelites, we can witness the mercy and justice of God.

Following this enriching study, London Church was again blessed with the arrival of Dn. Meishi Tsai (W. Germany) who conducted our second Bible Seminar (30th August - 1st September).  The chosen theme was 'Jesus Christ, the Apostle Paul and tie law'.  From the study of this complex topic, deeper implications of the term 'law', widely used in both testaments, were offered.  Lectures centered upon Jesus Christ and the law, and Paul's theology of life under the law and in Christ.

The final event of the summer was the Spiritual and Evangelical Convocation which took place from 11th to 15th September.  Conducted by Pr. Derren Liang (USA) and Dn. Joseph Shek (Scotland), the Spiritual Convocation comprised worship sessions and bible study on the book of James.  Participants learned the indispensable interrelationship between a person's faith and his works.  As a genuine Christian, he must grow up in faith, be mature in spirit and have actions that complement his belief.

Preparatory work for the evangelical services began several weeks before the event.  These included door-to-door distribution of gospel tracts, newspaper advertisements, public posters and notices.  It was indeed moving to witness the concerted efforts and dedication of the brothers and sisters.  Fully aware that the success of such a mission rests solely in God's hands, they also gathered daily to offer long prayers.  As the apostle Paul acknowledged, "So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth" (I Cor 3:7).  Their diligent work and devotional prayers surely touched the heart of our Lord.  He graciously brought many truth seekers to the church during and after the evangelical services.

The last day, l5th September, saw the sacraments of baptism, foot-washing and Holy Communion.  Praise the Lord, four new members were added to the fold.  And at the Holy Communion service, members gathered in full to commemorate the Lord's death. lye remembered Christ's passion, and we pondered upon His limitless grace and love.  Amongst tears of appreciation for His sacrifice, the Holy Communion heightened the awareness of the commission placed upon our shoulders.  The Lord has given His life for us: what have we given to Him?

Indeed, the summer of 1985 was an edifying season for LondonChurch.  Through His wonderful arrangement, God has reminded us of the need to grow in His grace and knowledge, and to be all the more dedicated towards His work.  We must "stand firm in one spirit, with one mind, striving together for the faith of the gospel" (Phil 1:27), "always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord" (I Cor 15:58).
