本詩另有一標題名為「Take My Life And Let It Be」。
本詩是素有「最甜美之聖詠家」之稱的法蘭西絲˙海弗格爾（Frances Ridley Havergal, 1836-1879）的創作作品。註
法蘭西絲自述作這首詩的起源：1873年12月，我去友人家作客五天。他們一家十人，其中有人雖認識主很久，但尚未接受救恩；有些是基督徒，但沒有喜樂。於是我向神禱告：「主啊！求祢將這屋裡所有的人都賜給我！」神成就了我的願望，在離開之前，所有的人都決志奉獻。
最後一晚，我們大部分時間是在讚美和獻身心為活祭，求主管理一生；我自己也再次得以更新。那晚，我過於興奮，以致無法入眠；這首詩在我心中湧出，一句接一句，直到「完全屬主到永遠」。
本詩源自《羅馬書》第十二章1節：「所以弟兄們，我以神的慈悲勸你們，將身體獻上，當作活祭，是聖潔的，是神所喜悅的，你們如此事奉，乃是理所當然的。」本詩於1874年首刊於Songs of Grace and Glory詩歌集中。爾後，這詩被廣譯成多國語文：法文、德文、瑞典文、俄文、中文、非洲土語等。並以「PATMOS」這曲調名為大家所熟知。

作曲者布利斯（Philip P. Bliss, 1838-1876）是奮興詩歌的先驅者，一生寫作了許多感性的福音聖詩。註
本會第297首〈為主我立何志〉（I Gave My Life for Thee），也同是這二位合作的作品。
