During
this time of the year, we see pink and red wreaths hung up and roses sold
wherever we go. With the air abuzz with talk of love and romance, let us take a
moment to reflect on the greatest love we will ever know in our lives.
For your Maker is your husband,
The Lord of hosts is His name;
And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel;
He is called the God of the whole earth.
(Isa 54:5)
Regardless
of our relationship status, we all have a loving husband in our God who created
us. With earthly “significant others,” we will sometimes have misunderstandings
and our mutual weaknesses limit us from a perfect love.
But it is
not so with our God.
For only through
Him do we know what love is (1 Jn 3:16). He understands us completely. He does all
things with our best interests at heart. And He is always faithful to us, even when
we are not.
Our
careers, other ambitions, enjoyments, and other people can at times pull our
hearts away from God. But even then, He remembers us. He remembers the time –
likened to a time of a betrothal or engagement – when we ran after Him, pursued
Him even in the wilderness (Jer 2:2). When we made a commitment to Him,
determined to ever follow Him, despite the difficulties we would face. Those
were the days in which we read His words with wide eyes and an eager heart, not
to fulfill a certain number of chapters. And those were the days
in which we savored our conversations with Him, sharing everything with Him in
prayer and feeling the depth of the love He reciprocated.
If it
feels as if it’s been a long time since those cherished moments with our
beloved Husband, let us recommit ourselves and find our way back to the One who
loves us most.
