In the Scriptures, the contrast between light and darkness represents the irreconcilable standoff between good and evil. "God is light and in Him is no darkness at all" (1Jn 1:5). Just as light drives away darkness, God’s perfect being simply allows no room for evil.
Thus, the division of light and darkness on the first day of creation teaches us an important truth: there can be no compromise between light and darkness. The apostle Paul teaches us, "Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?" (2Cor 6:14).
We used to live in darkness, in the cravings of our sinful nature. But God has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light (1Pet 2:9). Our new identity as Christians calls for a holy living: "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light" (Eph 5:8). Rather than being conformed to the patterns of this world, we must be separate (2Cor 6:17; Rev 18:4), set apart in our speech, conduct, and thinking.
Being bombarded daily with secular values, we may gradually accept and even adopt the godless lifestyle that is so prevalent in our society. We may console ourselves that we still attend church every week, but darkness may already be swallowing up the light within. We become unable to project God’s image and His light.
Therefore, the Bible commands us to live soberly, as in the day. "The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light" (Rom 13:12). Living soberly involves discerning between right and wrong. It also means fleeing evil desires and pursuing godliness. We need constant watchfulness in order not to become lost in the dark.
We can’t try to embrace both light and darkness. We have to make a choice. We cannot serve God while worshipping Mammon (material possessions). We cannot love God while hating our brothers. We cannot walk by the Spirit while living according to the flesh. Light and darkness have nothing in common. If we are truly children of light, let us leave the path of darkness and walk in the light.
Lord Jesus, help me daily to know right from wrong. Awaken my conscience with your Spirit so I may be sensitive to sin. Guide me with your Word so I may always walk in the light.
