Into the Mirror of God's Word
TOC | Previous | Next

Most people can go through the Bible briefly and get an impression of what the Bible is about. But the Bible will not be of any benefit until the reader slows down and raises the question, “What does this have to do with me?”

A person who observes his own face in a mirror may take different attitudes. He may think:
  1. Generally I am alright;
  2. I am fit for the present situation;
  3. On the surface everything is fine; or
  4. I don’t have much time for details.

Looking into the word of God, however, is like looking through a mirror into the world we are going to be in. On this side of the mirror is the present world in which we live. On the other is the world in we will live eternally. A person who sees the goodness of God’s law and His kingdom realizes he must change from what he is. He makes a conscious decision to step out of the present world and into the next: out of his present state in order to become presentable before God. Only when you step out of your old self and into a new self by following God’s instructions may you receive God’s blessings.

So how should you approach the mirror that is God’s word?
  1. Try reading a short passage in the Scripture and ask yourself what God is trying to say to you. Make a determination to seek after God’s will.
  2. Observe the old self and then the new self that appears in front of you.
  3. Don’t close the Bible until you have figured out what God is identifying: something in your life that you ought to change for the better.
  4. Make sure you have understood what the teaching is and confirm that you have understood it. Through reflection, determine the action you need to take.

Remember: you need to spend adequate time and preparation to attend the wedding banquet God has set (Mt 22:11-14). Have you spent time in front of the mirror? Are you ready for eternal life?
