The Greek name Pharisees, or Perushim in
Hebrews, means “the separated ones.”
They called themselves Hasidim meaning “the godly ones.” They insisted upon the strict observance of
the laws of Moses. They considered the
traditional rabbi teachings equal to the Old Testament Bible. Their prominence came about during the era
between the Old and the New Testaments.
