Trusting and waiting are virtues in the life of a Christian that need to be emphasized together. Resting in God without waiting for Him does not strengthen your faith, nor does it aid in your understanding of God's will. Likewise, waiting without relying upon God is as futile an effort as climbing a tree to look for fish. Trust can be likened to the unwavering center of a compass, while waiting can be likened to the compass itself. If your waiting is as steadfast as a firmly centered compass, your "needle" will be secure—only then can you draw the whole direction of a successful life of faith.
We need to be still as we rely upon the Lord to find our direction in life. When the Egyptians chased the Israelites to the edge of the Red Sea, Moses said to God's people, "Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today... For the LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace" (Exodus 14:13-14). We manifest our reliance on God by remaining still and committing everything to Him, without any doubt or fear.
We need to be patient in waiting. Once Jesus' brothers hastened Him to go to Judea. He said to them, "My time has not come yet." Waiting requires patience. Do not make haste. Do not lose heart. Watch how God accomplishes His will. There is a time for everything. As Jesus waited patiently for God's appointed time, we too, should wait upon the Lord.
The schemes of the wicked often succeed in this world, and their ways may often prosper. The way of the righteous, on the other hand, may be a thorny and perilous path. Yet the prosperity of the wicked can never last long. The plight of the righteous is temporary—Jesus is God who rewards goodness and punishes wickedness. Jesus knows the ways of the wicked and the plight of the righteous.
People without a vision for the future often complain about God's injustice in letting the wicked prosper. So often do they perceive this injustice that some Christians even think that one is better off doing evil than do good—reversing their moral principles and integrity. But the faithful will be still and rest upon the Lord as they wait for Him patiently. For they know that God never fails and that they only need to wait for His appointed time.
