These and the following verses present a dramatic picture of the “before and after†of God’s creative act. The description of the formless and dark primordial earth stands in sharp contrast to the beauty and order of Creation. Before God acted, the world was empty and dark. But as His Spirit moved upon the waters, God turned chaos into meaning. He commanded with His Word and light came into being, penetrating and dispelling the deep darkness.
God’s act of creation is symbolic of His transforming power in our lives. "For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ" (2 Cor 4:6). Before we knew Christ, our lives were without purpose or hope. Our hearts were darkened by the power of sin (Rom 1:21; Eph 4:18). We lived in strife, despair, shame, confusion, and fear. But by God’s grace, Christ brought light into our lives (Isa 9:2; Mt 4:16). With His Spirit and His Word, God recreated us in His likeness, with true righteousness and holiness (Eph 4:24).
If your heart feels empty and if darkness now reigns in your life, let God begin His creation in you today and make you into a new being. Accept the Lord Jesus, pray for the promised Holy Spirit, and live by His Word. If, as a believer, you have strayed from God’s way and have sunken into a state of spiritual void and confusion, invite the Lord Jesus back into your life and give Him control. Earnestly ask Him to fill you with His Spirit. Humbly hear and obey His Word. He who formed the world with His Spirit will also fill the void in you and give you joy. He who commanded light into being with His power Word will also turn your world of darkness into light.
