In whose name should we pray?

At the beginning and end of each prayer we should say “In the name of the Lord Jesus I pray” (cf. Jn 14:13–14), for Jesus’ name was given by God (Jn 17:11–12). Jesus is God’s name. Other “names” were actually more like titles than names (e.g., memorial names like “I AM WHO I AM”). Isaiah describes Jesus as, “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isa 9:6). Jesus said, “[W]hatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you” (Jn 15:16). We should pray in Jesus’ name, for it is our salvation (Acts 4:12).
