At the beginning and end of each prayer we should say “In the name of the Lord Jesus I pray†(cf. Jn 14:13–14), for Jesus’ name was given by God (Jn 17:11–12). Jesus is God’s name. Other “names†were actually more like titles than names (e.g., memorial names like “I AM WHO I AMâ€). Isaiah describes Jesus as, “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace†(Isa 9:6). Jesus said, “[W]hatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you†(Jn 15:16). We should pray in Jesus’ name, for it is our salvation (Acts 4:12).
