If the Clothing Fits, Wear It
A joy to some and a bane to others—that describes shopping for clothes. Finding fashionable clothing in the right size, made of comfortable material, and priced reasonably is always a challenge. The Bible has some excellent counsel for style-conscious clothing shoppers. It’s almost like the departments in a clothing store. Care for a tour?
The first stop is Psalm 45:3, which advises, “Clothe yourself with splendor.†Considering the date of this advice, the psalmist probably isn’t talking about evening gowns and tuxedos. But what style could be more magnificent than the look and feel of salvation? What splendor there is in going in style!
The second stop is Isaiah 52:1—the durable clothes department: “Clothe yourself with strength.†Nothing lasts as long as life in Christ, does it? It literally lasts forever. You need only one of these garments. Move on.
The next department is Colossians 3:12: “Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.†Christians find compassion always in style, though sometimes hard to find. We can get so caught up in our own spiritual “looks†that we forget what Christians are all about. Take several of these outfits so you can give them to those in need.
The fourth stop is 1 Peter 5:5—perhaps the most confusing department: Clothe yourself with humility toward one another.†Most designers create alluring clothing that attracts attention. Nevertheless, it is good to don this outfit often enough to remind us that the best-dressed people remain sinful and dirty unless they bathe themselves in much-needed forgiveness.
As with any shopping spree, the time comes to pay for the “prizes.†If we think the clothes are stunning, they are nothing compared to the bill. It would take a lifetime to pay it. And that’s what our Lord Jesus did. He gave His life to clothe us in the garments of righteousness. Feel free to fill your closet.
