The Holy Spirit is formless and shapeless; Jesus told us the Holy Spirit cannot be seen (Jn 14:17). How then do we come to accept the existence of an invisible Holy Spirit? Jesus told us about the experience of the Spirit’s power and existence. Jesus once said, “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit” (Jn 3:8). Jesus once breathed on his disciples and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn 20:22). Jesus’ comments on the Spirit show that when the Holy Spirit descends on someone, they will know and feel it. Unfortunately, many evangelical Christian churches today feel the Holy Spirit comes silently when we believe, or that the Holy Spirit silently stayed with the church after Pentecost.
