- Resisting the Holy Spirit. If we harden our hearts and fail to believe in Jesus then the Holy Spirit cannot dwell with us (Prov 28:14).
- Deceiving the Holy Spirit. Sometimes, out of self-interested motives, we try to deceive God. However, God cannot be deceived. Ananias and Sapphira, two early Christian church members, died when they tried to deceive the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:3).
- Disrespecting the Holy Spirit. Believers have received so much grace and truth from the Holy Spirit. However, if after we have received God’s grace and truth, we continue in our sins, we disrespect Jesus, Jesus’ blood, and the Holy Spirit (Heb 10:29).
- Blaspheming against the Holy Spirit. Some people call the Holy Spirit’s work and gifts the devil’s work (Mk 3:28–30). These people refer to God’s work as Satan’s work because they are ignorant of God’s intentions and ways. Jesus told us that a very serious mortal sin (sin which leads to death) and is not forgiven is to blaspheme against the Holy Spirit (Mt 12:31–32).
