Jesus died by crucifixion, a brutal form of capital punishment by the Romans. Jesus spoke his last words on the cross, saying, “It is finished,†meaning his work was accomplished. In the spiritual realm, finishing his work on earth meant God’s work was guaranteed. In the spiritual realm there is no space and time as we understand it. So Jesus bowed his head and gave up his spirit (Jn 19:30). One of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water (Jn 19:34). The blood and water opened up the fountain for the forgiveness of sins. In Christian terms, those who are baptized can be forgiven of their sins through Jesus’ blood.
